About The University
Aden Adde International University (AAIU) is a non-profit institution, registered with the Ministry of Higher Education of Somalia. The conception of AAIU took place in late 2015 with a group of Somali intellectuals lead by Prof Dr. Osman Aden, a prominent physician and geneticist who has spent his entire life in the service of his people. Following a civil war that destroyed the entire existing infrastructure, education institutions were amongst the greatest casualties of the war. University students faced multiple challenges including lack of facilities, qualified and experienced teachers, a lack of learning resources and most importantly internationally recognised qualification or accreditation.
Aden Abdulle Hospital (AAH) in Mogadishu is one of the biggest general medical hospitals where interns receive their practical training. Physicians and doctors regularly noticed gaps in academic knowledge and technical skills. The idea for the university was conceived when medical interns’ struggles were becoming progressively apparent. Engineering, Finance, Computer Science and graduates of other disciplines faced similar challenges. AAIU was founded to address these key challenges. Together with other notable physicians, it was decided that it would be imperative to have a university that provides quality university education, academic support and comprehensive training. Thus, we began to lay the foundation for transformative education that seeks to build individuals as a whole.
AAIU currently offers; Medicine, Health Science, Engineering, Veterinary and Agriculture. This will, in the long term, make AAIU a strategic institution in providing the required leadership to drive Somalia’s economy to the next level. Our focus shall be to provide; Quality at all levels, raising our standards to world class, providing degrees that are internationally recognised qualifications. Top notch research conducted at our university shall directly improve the quality of life and raise the standards of living in Somalia and beyond.
AAIU has more than a hundred students enrolled as of September 2016; these students are currently pursuing different undergraduate and diploma courses. Students do a one year foundation course to strengthen their subject knowledge and English command. AAIU has also created the Centre for English Language Studies to equip its learners with quality English programs and a chance to sit for the Cambridge International English Language Tests (IELTS) at our campus. AAIU’s core premise is embedded in its motto home of symbolic leadership; a pinnacle of hope for the many Somali students seeking knowledge.
AAIU is privileged to have Aden Abdulle Hospital as its training facility and also benefit from its state of the art equipment and expertise. AAH is a leading referral hospital not only in Mogadishu but the entire Somalia. AAIU takes interns from all other universities in Somalia. Our students will benefit from the hands on experience and improve on the practical approach in training medical students. In addition to that AAIU has a link with national farmers and livestock industries giving unlimited access to our agriculture and veterinary students for their field training. Similarly, we have cooperation with national engineering businesses.
The university also boasts of highly experienced qualified staff, handpicked from across the region to deliver top notch education, research, professional guidance and academic support through the entire courses and transform the quality of education to have an impact on the communities in need.
